Three Sisters in Glencoe - Classic Scottish Vista

A day trip to Glencoe today reminded me just how stunning the drive to and through the glen can be. Especially when the sun is shining. The ten miles or so from Rannoch Moor down to Glencoe village is one of the most spectacular mountain drives in the world. The Three Sisters pictured here are on the south side of Glencoe and are parts of the Bidean nam Bian massif.

Take a Holiday in Dumfries & Galloway

The south-west of Scotland is a beautiful location that is oft-neglected on the Scottish Tourist trail. It's a shame because it has so much to offer. The scenery, the coast, the outdoors sports, water sports and amazing towns and villages like Dumfries, Wigtown and Kirkcudbright make D&G a delightful location to spend a week or two.

Dumfries and Galloway has some excellent hotels, campsites, B&B's and other accommodation like this Kirkcudbright cottages website. Accommodation prices are often a little cheaper than in the Highlands of Scotland and for travellers from England, it is a lot closer than heading further north in Scotland.

Crieff Golf Course

The picture below is a winter shot of Crieff Golf Course taken this morning. Had a cracking morning cross-country skiing around the course and snapped off a couple of shots. Having a set of cross-country skis at home means you don't always need to head to the Scottish ski resorts for superb conditions.

A winter morning in Macrosty Park in Crieff, Scotland. Macrosty Park is undergoing a massive overhaul at the moment, all of which appears to be on hold while the weather has been wintry.

Family Activities for the Holidays in Scotland

As we slip into October, Schools across Scotland are preparing to break up for the Tattie Holidays. Times have changed though and no longer can you send the kids off to the fields to earn their keep picking potatoes every day of their holiday.

The Press & Journal is carrying a great article on things to do with kids during this autumn holiday. Being aimed at the P&J readership of course, most of the activities are in the North-east.

For anyone in the two big cities, our guide to free attractions in Edinburgh and things to do in Glasgow might just help out a little bit too.

Self Catering Lodges and Respite Care in Scotland

Earlier this year in Glen Almond near Perth and Crieff, a pair of beautiful holiday lodges opened. The holiday lodges are suitable for self-catering accommodation breaks but also offer short breaks and respite care services. Both lodges are fully accessible. The location is stunning and the friendly welcome you receive is fantastic. You can visit the lodges website at Tulchan Farm Lodges.

Birnam Hotel Open

I was very glad to receive an email last night letting me now that the Birnam Hotel is now open again with new owners and its been refurbished. It had been sitting empty for a while which was a shame for a hotel in such a cracking location.

The website at www.birnamhotel.com has all the details and a good bit about the history of this fantastic old building. We wish the new team the best of luck with it.

Where's Your Favourite Hogmanay Destination?

It's drawing to the end of the year and many people have detailed plans for Hogmanay (New year's Eve). I've spent Hogmanay in a number of different places over the years and just wondered where your favourite destination is on the night?

My favourite is probably Comrie in Perthshire where the sleepy little village comes out in the streets for the Flambeaux procession round town. The strong men of the village carry a collection of 20ft long flaming torches round the streets in order to chase out bad spirits. The whole thing is a great event.

I'm also very fond of Edinburgh's Hogmanay and had one memorable Hogmanay in the square at Dunkeld. I know there are bound to be a lot of fans of Glasgow and probably Stonehaven too.

So where's your favourite?

Clan Gathering Big Loss

Sad to hear in the Scotsman today that Edinburgh's Clan Gathering lost around £600,000. It was one of the main events in Homecoming Scotland. The failure to sell out all the tickets appears to be the reason. It would be interesting to know how other Highland games round the country have faired this summer and whether any losses are put down to the economy or just the crappy weather!

Hairy Coo Mountain Bike Challenge 2009

It's just over two weeks until this years Hairy Coo Mountain Bike Challenge at Comrie Croft near Crieff. It's running on 17th October 2009. This year's race has been altered quite a bit from last year with a new start/finish further up the hill and different rules on finishing in the Big Race. There are races for kids and inexperienced riders too and a great atmosphere. There are still plenty of places available click here for more.

Renting a Log Holiday Home

Many visitors to Scotland are attracted to a self catering Scottish holiday in a Log Cabin. There are not as many as you might imagine. Plenty of shortbread box cottages to rent but a lot less log cabins. To help with this we've put together a log cabin Scotland page where we'll list any log cabins that we've found to rent. Some might be more timber lodges but all share the same over-riding construction material: Wood!
